    • John Runciman was aged 33 when he was tried in Edinburgh on 22 February 1841 and transported for 10 years (Barossa 7 Aug 1841 to Van Diemans Land, arr. 13 Jan 1842). He was Presbyterian, could both read and write, was given as a gardener; The surgeons report, undated, but probably on arrival in 1842 shows "M Mary 1B James at the Cape of Good Hope W. Elizabeth (sic) md Dalkeith". He was convicted for horse stealing, 3rd conviction (prior convictions/sentences were 4 mths for clothes; again 12 mths for a coat). Worked for the Duke of Buccleugh for 11 years and his father had also worked for him for 32 years. John Runciman was 5 foot 8 inches, ruddy complexion, oval head, brown hair, dark brown whiskers, black eyebrows, eyes light grey, nose large, following remarks.."lost some front teeth.       Entry in Dalkeith 1837, for John & Isabella's marriage shows John as Gardener, both were "of this Parish" "Cautioners, for the Bridgegroom Melville Jack, for the Bride James Swan"
      The current interpretation is that Elizabeth is simply Isabella, particularly as these names may be interchangeable in usage
